The NBSAP is linked to the MDGs Goal 7 and CPAP 2005-2008.

Luanda, September 2008 - The project started on October 2004 to help defining the current status of biodiversity in Angola, the pressures it is exposed to, possible choices, and priority actions to be implemented in order to ensure its conservation, sustainable use and equitative benefit sharing for Angolans.

This UNDP/GEF project co-financed by NORAD, benefited from in kind contribution from MINUA and provincial governments, parallel funding by Petroleum Industry Operators for Environmental Health and Security committee and USAID.

The NBSAP is the first step in the biodiversity conservation rehabilitation programme after the war. It was implemented through a participatory process. More than 500 people participated at national level including actors of various biodiversity related expertise working at public and private institutions, communities and citizens in general.

The project outputs were totally achieved. The Steering Committee was established and functioning, six thematic studies were prepared based on which a document containing the NBSAP was elaborated, as well as, the First National Report to the Conference of Parties. Additionally, the project published two thematic studies, brochures on Environmental Legislation, the Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, and leaflets.

In order to attain the Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan global objective for 2006-20012, UNDP highlighted the importance of the establishment of the Management and Coordination Unit to allow the BSAP implementation.

The Ministry of Urban Affairs and Environment closed the event referring to the global and national importance of biodiversity conservation, reassuring Angola’s commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and showing interest in continuing cooperation with UNDP and other partners to achieve the Strategy objectives and goals.
