News and EventsUNDP and Angola Government ‘the Ministry of Science and Technology', took part on the 11th session of UN Science and Technology Commission for Development. Geneva, 26 to 29th of May 2008 - The conference held on the UN Palace between 26to 30 th of May, to check the progress made in the implementation and follow-up of results and recommendation of the last world summit on information society, held in November 2006 in Tunis(Tunisia). The UNDP/Angola Director, Drª Gita Welch and its Angolan government partners, a mission comprised by, Excellency Deputy of Prime Minister Mr. Aguinaldo Jaime, Excellency Minister of Science and Technology Mr. João Baptista Ngandajina, Deputy Minister of Science Technology Dr. Pedro Teta and the Permanent Representative of the Angolan Diplomatic Mission in the UN in Geneva Ambassador Arcanjo do Nascimento among other senior staff. Dra Gita Welch, intervention was on the theme of the role of Science Technology and Innovation in accelerating development, based on the Angola experience. Stem from previous ad hoc meetings in the implementation of STIP project, a partnership between UNDP, Ministry of Science and Technology and UNCTAD. STIP project aims to observe the Angolan situation technological and scientific development state, providing therefore guidelines to optimize its role on the development process of the country. UNDP/Angola Director stress that such guide stands to facilitate formulation of a coherent national strategy in the acquition of technological know how and promotion of innovation as vital source of development. In her speech she touches upon to a no less important aspect issues pertain to an all-embracing understanding and capacity to respond adequately to an array of challenges that the country confronts towards its reconstruction program, economic growth and development and so with the betterment of population life. Dr. Aguinaldo Jaime, Deputy Prime Ministry, said that Angola will implement policies to improve the countries current situation on its low capacity of technological and scientific development, in order to diminish its deficiency in the segment , its government is planning to strengthen cooperation and consultation of scientific and technological partnership, as well as the spread of the creation of public institutions for research and development, promoting wide and easy access to internet, the establishment of universities throughout the country and mature the sector of .information and communication of the country. UNDP is committed to work hand in hand with the government of Angola through various initiatives and programmes, to lessen its insufficiencies in the technological and scientific area, and enhance ever more its holistic approach of sustainable development.
