ASSESSING PROGRESS IN AFRICA TOWARD THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The 2015 Africa MDG Report is a joint publication of the African Union Commission (AUC), UNECA, AfDB and UNDP (RBA) – and it highlights Africa’s positive progress on some of the MDGs (see the attached infographic), challenges and the lessons that have been learnt in implementing the MDGs for the past 15 years. The report lays a good foundation to build on for the implementation of the SDG agenda.
The 70th UN General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), called Agenda 2030 – which was a historic decision on a comprehensive, far-reaching, ambitious and people-centred set of universal and transformative agenda to eradicate poverty in all its forms. Unlike the MDGs, it focuses on the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental pillars. The new Agenda will take effect in January 2016 and will build upon the achievements of the MDGs. The SDG declaration resolved, between now and 2030, to end poverty and hunger everywhere; to combat inequalities within and among countries; to build peaceful, just and inclusive societies; to protect human rights and promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls; and to ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources. It also resolved to create conditions for sustainable, inclusive and sustained economic growth, shared prosperity and decent work for all, taking into account different levels of national development and capacities.
For Africa, domesticating the SDGs into regional and national development plans, and ensuring that the countries we support have the capacities to implement the agenda on the get-go will be absolutely critical. Integration of the SDG agenda into national planning frameworks, mobilizing partnership and finances, and providing upstream engagement are pivotal to supporting our regional and national partners.
